Don’t forget about me: stories and portraits continue at Kouros Atelier
After spending August and the first week of September at Bibliotheek Gelderland Zuid, the portraits from Don’t forget about me are moving to a new location in Nijmegen.
From 23 September, the exhibition will be on display at Kouros Atelier in the Benedenstad, where the portraits will remain for around three to four weeks.
The exhibition at the library gave visitors the opportunity to discover a collection of personal stories from Nijmegen and its old working-class neighbourhoods. At Kouros Atelier, those stories will continue to be shared with a new audience.
Stories from Nijmegen’s old working-class neighbourhoods
Don’t forget about me, originally developed as Vergeet-me-niet Gesprekken, brings young people together with older Nijmegen residents to record memories and stories that might otherwise disappear over time.
Many of the people portrayed in the project have deep roots in Nijmegen’s old working-class neighbourhoods. Young people sat down with them to talk about their lives, the neighbourhoods they grew up in and the changes they have witnessed over the years.
Their conversations touched on everyday life, strong neighbourhood ties, community spirit, places that have changed or disappeared and memories that are still very much alive today.
These conversations became the starting point for a series of portraits on canvas.
The portraits are not simply images of the people taking part. Each one also represents a personal story and a piece of Nijmegen’s social history. Together, they offer a glimpse into the city through the experiences of people who have seen its neighbourhoods and communities change over time.
At the heart of the project is a simple idea: stories are kept alive when people continue to share them, listen to them and pass them on.
Meet the people behind the portraits
The exhibition at Kouros Atelier will officially open on 23 September.
Many, and hopefully almost all, of the people featured in the portraits will be there. The young people who interviewed them and collected their stories will also join us.
This makes the opening a special opportunity to not only see the portraits, but also meet the people behind them and hear more about the conversations and memories that inspired the project.
Visitors are warmly invited to join us for the afternoon, have a drink, explore the exhibition and meet the people involved.
