What is Bildung Nijmegen?

Bildung Nijmegen is a place where people come together to learn, grow, and reflect on what is happening within themselves and in the world around them. Guided by curiosity, personal involvement, or a sense that something is missing, we create space for ideas, questions, and themes to be explored in ways that are open, creative, and meaningful.

We bring together young people, students, teachers, artists, and others to explore social, personal, and contemporary issues. We do not do this through fixed formats or theory alone, but through dialogue, encounter, art, culture, and ways of working that invite people to truly participate, reflect, and discover new perspectives.

For us, learning is about more than simply gaining knowledge or skills. It is also about who you are, how you relate to others, what moves you, and how you continue to grow as a person. In that sense, we see Bildung as a living process: one through which people can be moved, challenged, and inspired to look at themselves, each other, and society in new ways.

This is also at the heart of our vision. We want to be a dynamic and accessible organisation where personal development, creativity, and meaningful connection are central. A place where people do not simply join what already exists, but are also invited to think along, create, and contribute to new ways of learning and coming together.

Over the years, we have organised gatherings, dialogues, workshops, and other programmes around themes such as climate change, friendship, love, digital detox, toxic relationships, citizenship, identity, youth participation, and social engagement. In this way, we continue to build environments where people do not simply attend, but can truly experience, share, and grow.

Why is Bildung Nijmegen necessary?

Education often prepares people mainly for a profession. We believe there is a need for more than that. The world around us is changing quickly, and with it the questions people carry with them. Questions about who you are, how you relate to others, what truly matters, and how to find your way in a society that is becoming more complex.

We see growing polarisation around us, along with moral, social, and ethical questions that ask for real attention. At the same time, many people are searching for direction, connection, and a sense of grounding. How do you stay open to people who think differently from you? How do you develop your own sense of direction? And how do you prepare for a future that is uncertain and constantly changing?

For us, Bildung is about the development of the whole person. Not only as a future professional, but also as a human being, a citizen, and part of a wider society. We believe this matters deeply today. When people learn to think critically, stay open, bridge differences, and better understand themselves, they are better able to move through change and uncertainty with confidence, awareness, and care.

That is why we believe a different way of learning, living, and working together is needed. One that makes room for nuance, dialogue, imagination, and for the person behind the opinion. One that sees diversity and inclusion not as abstract ideas, but as an essential part of how people learn from one another and how a richer, fairer, and more human understanding of the world can grow.

At the same time, technological developments are changing daily life at great speed. Artificial intelligence, algorithms, and automation are becoming more and more present in the way we live and work. This makes it even more important to keep paying attention to what makes us human: creativity, reflection, moral awareness, imagination, connection, and the ability to make meaning of what we experience.

It is from this belief that Bildung Nijmegen was founded: to create space for what often remains unspoken, and to make difficult or overlooked questions discussable, especially from the perspective and needs of the new generation. In doing so, we want to open up new ways of learning, meeting, and exploring together, where change is not only talked about, but also experienced, practised, and shaped in meaningful ways.

How does Bildung Nijmegen work?

At Bildung Nijmegen, everything revolves around people, meaningful encounters, and the questions that truly matter. The people involved in our organisation share a deep curiosity about what moves people and how space can be created together for growth, reflection, and new perspectives. That is why our approach begins with listening. We believe it is important that people feel seen and heard, that there is room for difference, and that people do not need to think the same in order to build something valuable together.

This way of working can be seen in everything we do. We develop and organise activities, projects, and learning environments in which personal development, social engagement, creativity, and connection come together. We do this locally, regionally, and internationally, always from the belief that learning is about more than knowledge or skills alone.

Within our Bildung Labs, we create space for young people, students, makers, teachers, and other participants to explore current social, personal, and cultural themes together. We do this through dialogue, art, culture, encounter, and non-formal learning. In this way, we create learning environments where people do not just talk, but also truly experience, share, and reflect.

In addition, we develop and deliver lessons and learning programmes on citizenship, global citizenship, and other social themes. We work closely with schools, educational institutions, and partners who are looking for forms of learning that go beyond theory alone. We also organise dialogues, gatherings, workshops, and social projects in which young people and other participants come together around issues that matter.

In Nijmegen, we work on themes such as youth participation, connection, identity, social engagement, and personal development. Through projects such as Jeugdverbinden 2.0, we bring together young people, organisations, and the municipality to engage in dialogue about issues that directly affect their lives and to build ideas and initiatives that can create real movement.

Alongside our local and regional work, we also develop and facilitate international projects within programmes such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps. Through these projects, we create learning experiences and exchanges in which young people, young adults, and professionals meet one another, learn from one another, and continue to grow both personally and socially.

Together with educational institutions, cultural organisations, social partners, artists, and makers, we build spaces where people do not only learn, but can also actively contribute, participate, and continue to grow. In this way, we create learning and development environments that are open, human, and relevant to the world we live in today.

Our board and core team provide the organisational continuity and support behind the activities we develop. We also regularly organise informal gatherings, such as our Bildung Meet-Ups, where people can connect, exchange ideas, and stay involved with what is happening within Bildung Nijmegen.
